The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is advocating a position on specific issues that is expressed through speeches and addresses to various groups, and organizations, and at special events. This series contains speeches and statements given by Governor George C. Wallace. In addition to the state legislature, the governor regularly addressed meetings of the Alabama Education Association, the Traffic Safety Conference, and participants of the annual Veterans Day program in Birmingham. Wallace also delivered speeches to audiences in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana, and New Mexico. Most of his addresses deal with education, state's rights, economic growth and traffic safety. During his 1972 presidential campaign, Wallace was severely injured in an assassination attempt in Maryland. This series reflects his absence from office at that time. There are no speeches for the entire year of 1972 with the exception of the announcement that he was running for president. The series contains no original copies of speeches delivered by Wallace during his 1975 to 1979 term in office. This omission includes his 1975 inaugural address. The inaugural text included in this series is a photostat of the reprint that appeared in The Montgomery Advertiser. The legislative addresses were copied from House and Senate Journals. The location of the original speeches is unknown.
